Syon is an Endon table lamp standing 51.5 cm tall on a slim bright-nickel base, with a faux-silk shade in mink — a warm greyish-beige that shifts with the light in the room. Its distinguishing feature, though, is not the look but the USB port built into the base. A USB port in the base Endon put a USB socket in the body of the lamp, so a phone or an e-reader charges at the same lamp you read by — without taking up a mains socket and without an extra charger poking out from behind the furniture. It is a solution aimed at a bedside table and a guest-room desk, exactly the places where sockets are usually shortest. The lamp also comes with a convenient toggle switch on the cord. The mink shade and what it does to the light The shade measures 25 cm across and 18 cm tall, made from a silk-imitating fabric. Mink is a shade between beige and taupe, fairly warm — light passing through it takes on a soft, creamy tone, and the shade itself glows evenly without its weave showing through. At 25 cm across and 51.5 cm tall, Syon throws light over a relatively small area around itself: this is a lamp for reading and for building atmosphere in a corner, not for lighting a whole room. The bulb is bought separately The lampholder is E14 and takes a candle bulb up to 40 W; the manufacturer supplies no bulb and notes that the lamp is compatible with LED lamps. That matters in practice: a 4–5 W LED gives brightness close to a 40 W incandescent at a fraction of the draw, and a filament-style bulb in clear glass plays nicely against the fabric shade.
