Sabouraud Dextrose Medium contains digestion products of animal tissue (peptones), which provide a nutritious source of amino acids and nitrogen compounds for the growth of fungi and yeast. Dextrose is added as an energy and carbon source. The low pH promotes fungal growth. The anti-inhibiting agents lecithin, polysorbate (Tween®) 80, histidine, sodium thiosulfate, and pyruvate are added to the medium to inactivate any disinfectant residues.
