The Bala L is the lampshade on its own: black rattan hand-woven over a metal frame and shaped into a dome with an open chevron weave. There is a hanging loop at the top and nothing inside — no lamp holder, no cable and no bulb. What you get and what you have to buy with it The maker sells The Bala L as a shade only. To light it you need a separately bought cord set with an ordinary E27 fitting — that is what carries the cable, the ceiling canopy and the bulb socket. The bulb is chosen separately again. That also leaves room to choose: cable length and braid colour are matched to your own ceiling while the shade stays the same. The bulb decides the light colour — for a dining room or living room, usually 2700-3000 K, a warm, slightly yellow light. How big it is and where to hang it The shade is 50 cm across and 50 cm tall, and weighs 1,4 kg with its packaging. 50 cm is well above the 40 cm at which a pendant holds its proportion over a table 80-90 cm wide, so a single piece covers a broad top on its own. The lower edge usually sits 70-80 cm above the table top. The weave is open, so light leaves not only through the bottom but across the whole wall of the shade, tracing the pattern of the canes onto walls and ceiling. The bulb is visible from the side as well — a clear one gives a sharp pattern and a visible filament, a frosted one a softer result. Hand-woven rattan Every shade is woven one at a time from natural rattan over an iron frame, so tone and cane spacing differ between pieces — the maker states this as a property of the goods. The colour is an opaque black across the whole weave. The shade is intended for indoor use only. The maker warns that outdoor use, even under cover, can damage the rattan through humidity and is not covered by the warranty.
