Nutrient pads for colony count determination using the membrane filtration method. These are sterile, dry culture media in Petri dishes. The advantage of this alternative to agar media is their long shelf life. Sartorius Nutrient Pads, or NPS for short, have been used successfully in conjunction with the membrane filtration method for 20 years. The membrane filtration method enables the quantitative determination of microorganisms in relatively large sample volumes. Inhibitors such as essential oils or preservatives can be easily rinsed out before incubation. Nutrient pads facilitate and simplify many microbiological testing procedures due to their practical handling. Microorganisms require the appropriate nutrient medium for optimal growth. NPS are sterile, dry culture media, already placed in sterile Petri dishes. After moistening with 3.0–3.5 ml of sterile distilled or demineralized water, the NPS are immediately ready for use.
