GIN is a table lamp 25 cm tall in which a flat disc-shaped shade 22 cm across rests on a slim column set on a round base. The collection was designed by the team at the Spanish brand Mantra. This piece is the café version — a warm, coppery brown to RAL 8007.The light comes out sideways, not downThe construction of the shade is the point here. Instead of aiming the beam at the surface, GIN encloses the light source in a flat acrylic disc and lets it out through a ring running all the way around. The result is a glowing hoop at the eye level of a seated person — soft, diffuse, with no hard circle of light beneath the lamp. This is a mood fitting: set on a chest, a console or a bedside cabinet it builds atmosphere and is an object in its own right, but it will not replace a reading lamp, because it does not send light where the book is.Café, meaning RAL 8007The finish the manufacturer calls café corresponds to RAL 8007 — a brown with a distinctly warm, coppery undertone, considerably more restrained than gold. Column and base share the shade; the cable is black. The GIN collection also offers black and gold versions and a larger size, so the same shape can be matched to a dark or a light interior.Three materials, each with a jobThe manufacturer lists the composition: aluminium, acrylic and steel. Aluminium carries heat away from the lamp and keeps the upper part light, steel gives the base the weight it needs for stability, and acrylic forms the light-transmitting ring of the shade. The whole lamp weighs 2.7 kg — a good deal for its size, which is a virtue: it does not tip when the cable is caught.A GU10 lamp, chosen separatelyThe fitting has one GU10 socket and comes without a bulb. Because the light passes through tinted acrylic, the choice of source genuinely changes the result: a warm 2700–3000 K will bring out the coppery tone of the body, while a neutral 4000 K makes the lamp look cooler and more technical. The fitting is not dimmable, so no brightness control is possible even with a dimmable bulb unless there is a dimmer in the installation.Operation and connectionThe lamp has an ON/OFF switch on the fitting itself — no hunting for a button on the cord and no reaching for the socket. The cable is 150 cm. A supply range of 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz means it will work on practically any mains. It is protection class II — double insulated and needing no earth.
