The Yang is a drinking glass made of recycled glass, with wavy walls instead of a straight cylinder and a noticeably thickened base. It stands 11 cm tall and measures 9 cm across the base, and the top edge is rolled outwards. How much it holds The glass holds 520 ml, appreciably more than the contents of a 330 ml can. With water or iced lemonade one filling lasts longer and you go back to the jug less often. At 9 cm across the glass is stocky rather than slender — compare that figure with the spacing of the prongs in your dishwasher basket and with the gap between shelves in the cupboard where it will stand. Recycled glass and what follows from it The glass is recycled and the colour comes from the raw material itself rather than from dyeing — the maker describes it as blue, and it is a gentle tone that shows clearly only against the light. The same raw material accounts for the fine bubbles and irregularities in the wall. The glass is made by hand, so individual pieces differ from one another and from the photograph: the shape of the wave, the thickness of the base and the depth of colour do not repeat to the millimetre. The thickened base puts the weight low and gives the glass a steady footing on the table. Looking after it The maker advises avoiding abrasive materials when washing and sudden changes of temperature — recycled glass copes badly with, for instance, boiling water poured into a vessel taken from the fridge. Ordinary washing with a soft sponge and detergent stays well inside those limits. The Yang is produced in Spain.
