Chance is a flush ceiling light 32.7 cm across and only 13.6 cm deep, in which an opal glass shade is held inside a brass cage of crossing hoops. Its IP44 rating admits it to a bathroom. The cage is structural The hoops running around and across the shade are not applied decoration — they are the frame that holds the glass. Hence the sense of solidity that comes from the marine and industrial fittings this drawing descends from. A side effect is shadow: switched on, the lamp casts a faint pattern of bars onto the ceiling, which in a small room can be an asset and in a large plain interior is worth considering. Opal glass and two sources The shade is white opal glass, not clear — the two E27 lamps stay completely hidden and light emerges evenly across the whole surface. That is the right solution for a fitting mounted tight against the ceiling, where visible sources would sit in the eyeline of anyone who looks up. Two points rather than one give brighter, more even light at a lower wattage per lamp. 13.6 cm of depth matters The fitting projects less than fourteen centimetres from the ceiling. In a bathroom with a dropped ceiling or in a loft room, where an ordinary pendant would be in the way, that is usually the deciding dimension. The 32.7 cm diameter suits a bathroom of a few square metres; in a larger room two fittings will serve better than one. Where it may be installed IP44 is protection against splashing water from any direction — the fitting suits a washbasin, the surroundings of a bath, and a hall or bedroom. It is not intended for the inside of a shower enclosure or for the direct spray zone above a bath. It is protection class I, so an earth conductor must reach the ceiling box. The manufacturer lists it as a ceiling fitting — wall mounting is not something they provide for. Lamps and dimming The fitting takes two E27 lamps of up to 60 W each and is sold without light sources. Dimming is possible but depends entirely on the lamps: the fitting contains no dimming gear, so lamps described as dimmable and a suitable dimmer are both required. Since the shade is opal, bulb shape makes no aesthetic difference — colour and output are what count. Finish and brand The colour is Painted Natural Brass — a lacquered finish in a brass tone, not solid precious metal, which is worth knowing when cleaning: a soft dry cloth is enough, and metal polish is not.
