The s.luce Atom is a 208 cm floor lamp topped with an open sphere of black metal struts, 70 cm across. Ninety-two small light points sit at the nodes of the lattice, and the lamp stands on a round, flat base. Brightness is set by touch — the dimmer is built into the fitting. How much room it needs At 208 cm the sphere sits roughly at the eye level of someone standing, not above it — this is a lamp for the side of an armchair or a corner of the room, not for over a table. The sphere alone is 70 cm across and needs that much clearance all round; compare the figure with the gap between the furniture where the lamp is to stand. The base is round and flat, as wide in plan as the rest of the body. The whole package weighs almost 17 kg, which at this height makes for a steady footing. How much light it gives and how it is controlled The 92 LED points come to 2484 lm together — about as much as three old 60 W bulbs — while drawing 27.6 W. The 3000 K colour is a warm white close to a traditional incandescent, and a colour rendering index above Ra 80 is enough for a living room or a bedroom. Dimming needs no accessories: the touch switch on the fitting varies the brightness steplessly, so no separate dimmer and no change to the wiring are required. Because the points are spread over the whole surface of the sphere, the lamp emits in every direction and casts the shadow of its own lattice onto the walls. Light source and construction The light sources are included — the lamp works straight out of the box. They are 0.3 W LED festoon lamps of 27 lm each; the manufacturer sells them separately as well, so a failed point is replaced on its own rather than returning the whole lamp. Rated life is 25,000 hours over 15,000 switching cycles. The construction is metal throughout, in a black finish.
