Stoneware, not porcelain The plate from the Aqua collection is made of stoneware — clay fired hotter than earthenware, which leaves the body dense, non-porous and noticeably heavier in the hand. At 22 cm across and only 2 cm tall the plate weighs 0.53 kg, and you feel it at once: this is a piece that sits firmly on the table and does not shift under a knife. The maker calls it a salad plate, but 22 cm is in practice a universal size — it takes a starter, tapas, a dessert or a single dish for a light supper. The flat form with a slightly raised rim shows food well and keeps sauce inside the outline. Reactive glaze — why every plate is different The colour comes from a reactive glaze, which behaves unpredictably in the kiln: its components react with one another during firing and form crystalline, radiating patterns running from the centre to the rim. The tone moves from deep sea green and teal into a more saturated, darker edge. The consequence is practical and worth knowing before buying: no two pieces are identical. Differences in how the pooling falls, in colour intensity and in the run of the crystallisation are a property of the technique, not a fault. If you are building a set, treat that variation as the point — the plates will differ the way pieces of studio ceramics differ. Handmade, and where it comes from The plate is handmade and produced in Portugal, a country with a long tradition in tableware ceramics. Hand forming means small variations in diameter and wall thickness between pieces; for tableware of this kind that is the norm rather than a deviation. In use Glazed stoneware is hard and resists scratching from cutlery, but like any ceramic it does not tolerate sudden temperature changes — do not put a cold plate into a hot oven or pour boiling water onto it straight from the kettle. Mild detergent and a soft sponge are enough for everyday washing; what dulls a reactive glaze fastest is harsh abrasive powder.
