Velo is a set of five pendant shades in mouth-blown smoked glass, hung from one round canopy 60 cm across. The metalwork and the cables are black, and each shade is vertically ribbed and open at its lower end. How big it is and how it is hung The canopy measures 60 cm across and 4 cm deep, and the manufacturer recommends fixing it with three screws. The whole set weighs 18.6 kg, so the fixing has to reach a load-bearing part of the ceiling - plasterboard alone will not carry that mass. The fabric cables run up to 500 cm and are shortened during installation, which lets the shades sit at different heights. Over a dining table the cables are usually cut so the lowest shade ends 70-80 cm above the table top. Shades of mouth-blown glass The shades come in three sizes: 18, 20 and 25 cm across, standing 33, 20 and 27 cm tall. Each one is blown by mouth, so shapes differ slightly from piece to piece - that belongs to the technique. The glass is smoke-tinted and see-through, leaving the bulb visible. Light leaves both through the glass wall and through the opening at the lower end, which sends a beam straight down. The smoke tint holds back more light than clear glass, so the pool underneath is darker and softer. Bulbs and dimming Each shade has an E27 holder for a lamp of up to 40 W. No bulbs are included, so colour and brightness are yours to choose - a dining room usually takes 2700-3000 K, warm light. Five separate light points also means five bulbs to buy. The fitting can be dimmed only with bulbs described as dimmable and a matching dimmer, as it carries no control gear of its own. Class I construction means an earth conductor has to be connected. Where the manufacturer places it s.luce intends the gallery version of Velo for long dining tables, kitchen islands, open living spaces and stairwells.
