The s.luce Orb is a pendant lamp with a glass globe 50 cm across. The glass is mouth-blown and graded in colour: gold and opaque at the top, growing lighter towards the bottom until it is clear. The globe hangs from a white cable, and the lampholder and cross bracket inside it are gold-coloured. How high it hangs The suspension measures up to 500 cm and is shortened at the ceiling, so the lamp is intended for rooms two storeys tall as well — the manufacturer names stairwells and galleried halls. In an ordinary room the drop is cut back to a few dozen centimetres. Over a table the bottom of the globe usually sits 70–80 cm above the top. The globe is 50 cm in both diameter and height, so it claims a visible amount of space above the table: compare that figure with the width of your table top before choosing a size. The light it gives and what you buy alongside Inside the globe is a single E27 holder rated up to 40 W. No bulb is supplied. The lower half of the glass is clear, so the light source is visible from below — which is why this fitting is usually paired with a decorative filament lamp rather than a frosted one. The lamp can be dimmed, but it has no dimmer of its own: you need a bulb described as dimmable and a dimmer in the circuit. The gold upper part of the glass holds the light back and throws it downwards, while the lower part lets it through. Glass, weight and connection Every globe is blown by mouth, so small differences in glass thickness and in how the gradient runs are a mark of the making rather than a fault. Shade and suspension together weigh 2.22 kg — that is what the ceiling fixing has to carry; on a suspended ceiling, anchor into the supporting structure.
