The Steinel IR Quattro 8m COM1 is a presence detector for concealed mounting in a ceiling. It works in the infrared band and additionally measures the brightness in the room, and its detection field is square — not circular as on ordinary PIR detectors. The housing is white plastic in RAL 9010 and measures 12 × 12 cm on the face with a 7.6 cm build depth. What area it covers and how high it goes The manufacturer gives three reaches, because the detector responds differently to movement towards it than to the presence of a seated person: 5 × 5 m for movement towards the detector, 7 × 7 m for movement across the field and 4 × 4 m for presence alone. That last figure is the one that matters at a desk — it is the area in which the detector registers someone who is only typing. The mounting height runs from 2.5 to 8 m, and the manufacturer names 2.8 m as the optimum. The detection field covers a full 360°, and its square shape can be reduced mechanically by masking part of the lens. The detector also has a sneak-by guard. What load it will switch The maximum load is 2000 W, but for LED lamps the limits are far lower and are usually the ones that decide: 600 W for lamps above 8 W, 300 W for lamps between 2 and 8 W, and 100 W for lamps below 2 W. Fluorescent lamps on an electronic ballast — up to 1500 W. The permitted capacitive load is 176 µF. The supply is 230 V, 50–60 Hz. IP20 and a temperature range of 0 to 40 °C mean installation inside a building only. Settings and linking several units The twilight threshold is set between 10 and 1000 lx and the run-on time from 30 seconds to 30 minutes. Settings are entered with DIP switches and potentiometers or with a remote control — the remote is not in the box, the manufacturer offers it separately, as it does a surface-mounting adapter and a guard cage. COM1 is the version that only switches the light on and off: it does not dim and does not hold a constant light level.
