The Carissima 40 is a pendant lamp with a hemispherical metal shade 40 cm across, lacquered in matt black. The inside of the shade is gold and stepped into concentric rings. The lamp hangs on a black cable ending in a round ceiling rose. How big it is and how high to hang it The shade is 40 cm across and 20 cm deep, and the cable is 150 cm long and shortened during installation. Over a table a pendant like this is usually hung so the lower rim sits 70–80 cm above the top — the light then covers the whole surface and people at the table do not look straight into the source. A 40 cm shade keeps good proportions over a table 80–90 cm wide. The lamp weighs 1.22 kg, so an ordinary ceiling hook carries it; in a plasterboard ceiling the fixing has to reach the supporting structure. What bulb it needs The lamp has one E27 lampholder and runs on 230 V mains. No bulb is supplied, and the manufacturer caps the lamp at 15 W — a figure an LED bulb fits inside and a classic 60 W incandescent does not. Dimming depends entirely on the bulb fitted: the manufacturer states the lamp dims with a suitable light source, and the fitting itself carries no control gear. The gold interior throws the light down onto the surface below the lamp and, unlike a white interior, gives that reflection a warmer tone. Where it works The manufacturer intends it over a dining table, in a living area and in commercial interiors — the catalogue also assigns it to a bedroom, a hotel and a restaurant. In all of those the lamp hangs over one particular place rather than lighting a whole room. The form is modern and unornamented: a smooth half-sphere, plain black outside, with a single colour accent that only shows from underneath.
