Beam XL is a pendant light made up of 24 spherical black shades 8 cm across, hung on thin cables from a single flat canopy 80 cm in diameter. In this version the shades are black and the canopy is white. The metal is brushed, so it returns light as a matt sheen rather than a gloss. How much room it needs below the ceiling The canopy measures 80 cm across and 7 cm deep — it is one large disc on the ceiling, not 24 separate fixing points. The cables are 250 cm long and are shortened one by one, so the shades hang at different heights; fully extended the fitting reaches 2.5 m below the ceiling. That span is meant for tall interiors — the maker lists Beam XL among its fittings for galleries, stairwells and foyers, the places where a light hangs in a space open to the floor above. The shipping weight is 32 kg, so the ceiling fixing has to be planned for that load rather than for an ordinary hook. How much light it gives The 24 light points give 12,000 lm together, a brightness on the level of more than a dozen old 60 W bulbs — this is the main lighting of a large room, not an accent. The 3000 K colour is warm white, and the whole fitting draws 192 W. The light can be dimmed, but a leading- or trailing-edge dimmer is needed and none is supplied. The LEDs are built in permanently and are not replaceable: the maker quotes 25,000 operating hours, 15,000 switching cycles and energy class G. Build and connection The shades are made of metal and acrylic glass, the body of brushed aluminium. The fitting runs straight off the 230 V mains with no external driver, so no separate box has to be hidden above the canopy. The canopy carries slots in which the suspensions are placed — the maker allows up to 35 lights on it and permits mixing shades from other s.luce series, so the arrangement can be filled in later.
