(IEX) HPLC allows the separation of polar molecules (charged) including but not limited to amino acids, organic acids and bases, proteins or peptides, based on their affinity to ionic groups bonded on silica. The retention on the column is reversible by "exchange" of ions between the target ions in the mobile phase to the ions present on the ligands. Cation Exchange columns have a negative charged ionic group with an affinity for polar molecules having a positive charge. These Cogent IEX WCX™ (weak cation exchange) HPLC columns have carboxylic acid functional groups bonded to the Cogent RP™ 5 or 10um, 100A silica. pH range 2.5-7.
